  3. This is the tale of a cobbler’s son, who latinized his German name, Cremer, which means “merchant” and changed it to Mercator, which means “world trader”. Today, we all know him as the “Mercator-projection”. But few of us know anything else about the man who became the father of modern mapmaking.

On the occasion of his 500th birthday on March 5, 1512, we tell the story of his life, his work and his time in a 40 minutes documentary, commissioned and realized with the cooperation of the “The Society of Antiquaries of the Land van Waas” (non-profit organization).

Here we publish a short portrait of this universal genius, born in Rupelmonde (Flanders) in 1512.

Furthermore, we refer to “Mercator, the man who mapped the planet” by Nicholas CRANE. During our research we were very much inspired by his book and we recommend it as a compulsive reading for all those interested in 16th-century Europe!

Jeff Marsh (Feature presentation), Dean Landon (Latin Kiss), Joseph Michael Mc Gregor (Lover’s touch), Pierre Gerwig Langer (Combined Force), Francisco Becker (Coral Wonder, Ethereal sensation, Light in the shadows, Remembering the years, Without notice ), Joel S. Goodman (Tonight’s news), Chris O’Brien (The seventh passage).
