Hosanna Lutheran Church

Biblical Background:

Today we hear about John the Baptist, whose message is reflective of the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah. Isaiah lived 750 years before John began his ministry. A lot of history has happened: Assyria conquers Israel; Babylon conquers Judah; Persia conquers Babylon; Greece conquers Persia; Israel throws off Greek rule and lives in freedom for 100 years, then Rome enters the picture and conquers them. But two things remain constant: 1) God remains faithful to His people; and 2) God’s people continue to stray from God’s way of life for them.

Isaiah noticed that despite the financial well-being of their nation, those with wealth and position were more and more using their status to distance themselves from the poor and marginalized. This “theology of glory” understood God as “rewarding them materially” for their religious practices. In this understanding, everyone gets what they deserve.

Isaiah preached just the opposite to them, calling them to lead both public and private lives that reflect God’s way of life, lives that show care and concern for the “least of these”. This call for repentance, this change of heart, is the subject matter of “speaking truth into reality” that the Old Testament prophets share. John the Baptist returns to this same theme 750 years later, and brings this message to the days and time of Jesus, calling people to repent and turn their hearts to God’s way of life… life in the Kingdom!
