  1. The Minnesota courts have the obligation to realize the constitutional promise of justice for all. From the manner in which judges are selected, to the structure of the court system, to the specific work of judges, to the adoption of innovative and alternative initiatives, come learn how every person in the Minnesota Judicial Branch puts forth their best effort to address the needs of Minnesotans and provide justice for all.

In 2013, Governor Mark Dayton appointed Jennifer Frisch to serve as a district court judge in Ramsey County, Minnesota’s Second Judicial District. In 2018, Judge Frisch was elected to serve as the Assistant Chief Judge in the Second Judicial District. Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Frisch served as Senior Associate General Counsel for the University of Minnesota for 11 years, where she represented the University in state and federal courts in all litigated matters. Before joining the University’s Office of the General Counsel, Judge Frisch practiced commercial litigation at Kelly & Berens in Minneapolis. Judge Frisch received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Macalester College and her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School.

  2. In her presentation, “Brain Health Across the Lifespan,” Dr. James will discuss research on healthy brain aging, highlighting her recent findings from the Minnesota Brain Resilience Initiative that certain specific immunity genes prevent brain decline with age. She will describe the implications of her work in terms of specific factors that contribute to brain decline and, conversely, encouraging possibilities for keeping our brains healthy.

Lisa James, PhD, holds the Kunin Professorship Chair of Women’s Healthy Brain Aging – a collaboration of the University of Minnesota Medical School and the Brain Sciences Center at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. She conducts research on brain aging in women to determine the conditions and environments that best promote healthy brain aging in women.

  3. Nate Hagens is a public intellectual and futurist who tries to make sense of our situation -and avenues for change - by looking at systems science - how the big picture of energy, economy, environment and human behavior fit together.

Specifically, Nate will speak about how our culture is now growth-constrained which means the probable choreography in the next decade is unlikely to be what most people expect. His talk will conclude with discussion on what Minnesota residents can do - should do - for themselves and for their communities to participate in our rapidly unfolding uncertain future.

Nate teaches Reality 101-The Human Predicament at the University of Minnesota and is developing a series of related projects for humans living differently with each other, within nature, this century.

  4. Racism is a phenomenon that emerges from our individual lived experiences and the culture in which we grow up and participate in as adults. A humanistic perspective or a logical mind does not obviate biases in how we know things, and thus, how we perceive or perform as actors in it.

Anthropologist Greg Laden will discuss North American racism as a phenomenon in science and society, its history, and how it is maintained. How do racial, or similar, biases form at the individual and societal level? How are they affected, or not, by societal fixes, great speeches, or education? How can Humanists be better humanists by grappling with this difficult area of human behavior?

Greg Laden is a biological anthropologist, educator, and science writer. His PhD work (at Harvard) was with the Efe Pygmies of the PR Congo, and he has contributed to research on the key features of human evolution, the initial chimp-human split, and the rise of our genus Homo. More recently, Laden studies, speaks, and writes about climate change and race and racism. He is working on a book on falsehoods we know and love.
