The International Center for Traditional Childbearing

  1. In 2005, the ICTC received a call from Katherine Hall, founder of Birthing Project US, asking if the ICTC would be willing to go Sierra Leone, West Africa to train traditional midwives on how to provide prenatal care in the village. Without hesitation the ICTC responded with “yes”. Soon after, 13 ICTC delegates traveled to the village of Yele where they trained traditional and aspiring midwives in established prenatal care protocol, the importance of hydration and validating Yele’s positive birth traditions.

Shafia M. Monroe, Barbara Douglass, Carlotta Crawford, Ruth Kaufman, Julie Shiprack, Imam Mikal H. Shabazz, the Yele Paramount Chief and many others contributed to a rich and emotional experience of midwives exchanging information, through prayer, song and love.
