Imagineer Systems: mocha planar tracking videos

  1. We are happy to announce the Mocha 5.6 Point Release!

Mocha 5.6 is a free point release for all owners of Mocha Pro or Mocha VR. While stereoscopic workflows are the main promoted feature, We'd like to share a few important features and fixes relevant to Mocha Pro owners.

One of the major features for our Mocha Pro users is the Mocha Plug-in Auto-save: The Mocha plug-in now has Auto-save to external file location.
Turning Mocha into a plug-in has been a very popular feature as all your Mocha work is saved back to your host project. However, we heard from our users that you wanted to see more "project saving" backup insurance while working inside the Mocha interface. We Listened! Now in Mocha 5.6, a user can set the auto-save preferences, so your Mocha session is always backed up.

Another popular request that we have addressed is that you can now Save the last used Mocha project Open and Export locations. No more tedious hunting for the same directory 100 times! The Open & Export dialogue retain the last used path location.

There have been many bug fixes addressed as well! We have made RAM improvements in Nuke, fixed some Python errors that were causing script problems, Remove blending now blends correctly, and a persistent manual tracking bug where the surface tool would not update and keyframe correctly has been fixed as well. There have also been adjustments to the reorient, insert, and remove modules and Memory allocation on the GPU is more robust across the board. To find out more, see our release notes!

Adobe also fixed the error that was causing Copying shape data to the clipboard from mocha to crash After Effects. This in a new After Effects patch, so you will need to pick up the latest download of Adobe AE CC 2018 to address this issue!

Mocha VR is designed for common mono & stereo 360 tasks: horizon stabilization, removing the camera at nadir, inserting tracked graphics that follow objects and general spherical tracking and masking tasks.

Available as a standalone application or plug-in for Adobe After Effects & Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and OFX Hosts: Nuke, Fusion, Vegas Pro & HitFilm Pro.

  3. Mocha Pro tutorial: Solving for Complex Object Removes.

In this advanced VFX video tutorial, Mary Poplin reviews the steps she used to remove multiple objects from a moving shot with the Mocha Pro plug-in from Boris FX. Covers advanced tips for planar tracking and object removal.

Combining multiple mask layers for speed.
Consider geometry and planes - when objects pass various planes, you will need multiple tracked background surfaces for best remove results.
Consider how the background is moving and isolate areas that move differently than one another for best results.

The Mocha Pro plug-in supports Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, NUKE, Fusion, HitFilm, Vegas Pro and more.

  4. Object removal made easy with Mocha Pro. Tutorial by Mary Poplin covers Mocha Pro running inside Adobe Premiere Pro with Photoshop for generating the clean plate.

Removing graffiti on a moving object can be a very difficult post-production task, but with the Mocha Pro plug-in for Adobe (and a little Photoshop cloning), we can make this an automated task.

    1. Mocha Pro is applied as a plug-in inside Premiere.
    2. The side of the camper is tracked with Mocha's planar tracking.
    3. A mask layer for the graffiti is linked to the first track. (Layer order is important!)
    4. In the Remove Module, "create clean plate" this exports a frame to file.
    5. Open this clip in Photoshop to paint out the one frame. Save.
    6. In Mocha Pro, select "use cleanplates exclusively".
    7. Choose desired Illumination settings.
    8. Exit to Premiere and turn on Remove Module render.

The Mocha Pro plug-in also supports After Effects, Avid Media COmposer, Nuke, Fusion and Sony Vegas. Learn more at:

  5. In this short tutorial, Mary Poplin shows you how to use the Mocha Pro AVX plug-In inside Avid Media composer to remove a boom mic. Mocha Pro's powerful Remove Module uses planar motion tracking and "temporal frames" to automatically remove unwanted objects.

    1. Mask the object to remove
    2. Track the background
    3. Select your remove layer and render
