  1. The Climate Smart Low Carbon Cities Program, was a USAID-funded program that worked with four pilot communities to develop low-carbon development solutions.

Because of ISC's work with these four cities, an estimated 27 million tons of CO2 will be mitigated through a projected $40 billion in investments between 2017 and a 2030.

  3. ISC launched the Gulf Coast Sustainable Communities Network in 2009, in response to the many issues communities were facing as a result of the devastating 2005 hurricanes.

Reaching from Alabama into Texas, the network is forging stronger connections among organizations and local leaders in more than a dozen of the region’s most vulnerable communities. It connects coastal communities to one another, helping them take practical steps to make housing more affordable, create economic opportunities, foster a healthier environment and mitigate the impacts of climate change—to make informed choices about their future.

Through an integrated program of community exchanges, training workshops, technical assistance, and support for emerging leaders, the network provides an avenue for civic leaders from across the Gulf Coast to share information and ideas, learn from and support each other’s activities, and take small programs and local innovations to scale.

The Sustainable Communities Boot Camp served teams of practitioners—including those with senior responsibility in planning, transportation and economic development as well as real estate developers and social equity partners—from 13 regions that won grants under HUD’s Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program.

The Boot Camp was organized by the Institute for Sustainable Communities with support from Living Cities. Visit iscvt.org to learn more.

Decision Commons is an initiative of the Quality Growth Alliance, University of Washington, and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce.

This video was presented as part of ISC's Sustainable Communities Boot Camp in January 2011. Visit iscvt.org to learn more.
