Volunteers at work: UNV and IYV+10

Volunteering empowers youth and marginalized people to take an active part in society, and adds to their overall sense of well-being.

During the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers in 2011, Philip Sen from the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme met various volunteer-involving organizations to learn more about how they make a positive impact at the grassroots.

Here we see two volunteer-involving organizations in Ankara, Turkey, linked by a young woman called Selda Bicer. Selda's experiences as a volunteer with GSM - an NGO specializing in youth volunteer camps abroad - inspired her to build bridges between different communities at home.

She and other volunteers help improve the lives of Roma children in the deprived areas of the city via the Roma Youth Association ('Romankara'), developing the self-confidence the deprived children need to continue with their education in an often difficult environment.
