Following a month on the South Island, we crossed by ferry on Feb. 25, 2014 to Wellington and cruised around the North Island until March 26th. Being active, hiker types, we found info in Scott Cook's book NZ Frenzy, North Island to be very useful. You can order it on Amazon. Watch our South Island video as well vimeo.com/97964328 Two months in New Zealand was just not enough time. We have to return! WATCH IN HD, full screen. On our extended trip "down under", we fly from Australia on February 6, 2014 and spent three weeks checking out the sights on the South Island of New Zealand. We took the ferry from Picton on Feb. 25th to the North Island for an additional month. North Island video can be see here vimeo.com/101874134 . Note: The guidebook we highly recommend for the active hiker types is NZ Frenzy by Scott Cook. There are two books, one for each island. You can find them only on Amazon.
Hiking the Sierras near Bridgeport, CA. We spent a week at a cabin at Mono Village (Twin Lakes). There were some pretty autumn colors. Hikes included up Lundy canyon, up to Green Lake and beyond Barney Lake, toward Pieler.

This was Jack's third attempt at this mountain. The previous two times he was turned back because of snow. There is a YouTube movie of the attempt in October, 2007 here youtube.com/watch?v=ojv76DrT8yw
Mt. Tom is 13,658 ft. and located in the Sierras, just West of Bishop, CA. It is a predominant sight from highway 395, especially as one drives up or down the hill just North of Bishop. The climbing route via Horton Lake is not technically difficult but Mt. Tom is not a walkup either. Enjoy the movie!
