Born in West Virginia in 1925, James Russell joined the Navy during the Second World War and served on the USS John D. Henley in the Pacific. The ship provided offshore support during six major battles: Saipan, Guam, Tinian, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. After the war Russell started working for a telephone company.
