Japan

  1. This January my family and I returned to Niseko, Japan after a having a dry week 2 years ago. This year turned out a little different. There wasn't a day without snow and we had the some of the deepest days on snow we may have ever had. A friend from the UK also came to join for a few days at the end and we then carried on after the family had left for another week touring Japanese resorts with Black Diamond Lodge, needless to say it was pretty excellent.

Being able to get the right balance between filming and skiing was pretty tough and this video really doesn't show how much snow we actually got... it was just to fun to stop and film. I love Japan and will most certainly be going back.

I would like to dedicate this film to Sarah Burke who recently passed away. I don't know her personally but she was an inspiration to the sport and will be sorely missed.

    Filmed on a 7D and a GroPro HD 2

  2. This short video uses a scene from Kill Bill Vol1: Chapter 4, the man from Okinawa, and japanese typography.

It was made to provide viewers with a simple visual language aid to the conversation taking place.

We love this scene and found it interesting that the Japanese was left untranslated. There are alot of films that allow conversation to take place without subtitles, the one that comes to mind is lost in translation. Although it can add a nice natural audio ambience to the film, it is always nice to know what is being said.

This piece ends quite abruptly, we decided to concentrate on a small section where the language was simple, the japanese gets quite intense after this point. Additionally, we wanted this video to be as much about the japanese type (which is rarely exploited outside of basic fonts in the western video world!) as it is about the language itself.

NOTE: This video was put together as a bit of fun, and is not intended as a proper learning aid.

  4. Documentary following sculptor Shota Kotake as he builds a life-sized, self-portrait, ball-jointed doll of himself. Thoughts on life and death are called into question along the way.

  5. Filmed over 2 weeks in Tokyo, Japan. I first visited Tokyo nearly 10 years ago and was swept away by its futuristic society steeped in ancient culture. Scenes include Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Roppongi, Asakusa, Tsukiji fish market, Meiji Shrine, Rainbow Bridge at Odaiba, Tokyo Tower, Yokohama, Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi, and Nikko world-heritage shrines.

As we visited during the New Year, we were lucky to attend the "dezuiri" sumo ring-entering ceremony, which you'll see in the opening shot. We also captured "yumi hajime" (first archery practice of the year) as well as "hatsumode" (first shrine visit of the year) at Asakusa.

Other shots include Shinjuku, Shibuya, Roppongi Hills, Meiji Shrine, Rainbow Bridge at Odaiba, Tokyo Tower, Tsukiji fish market, Yokohama, Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi, and Nikko world-heritage shrines.
