Jatiwangi Artists in Residence Festival was first held in 2006 under the name Jatiwangi International Performance Artist in Residence Festival 2006. A residency performance art festival held in 3 villages, districts Jatiwangi. Then in 2008 changed its name to Jatiwangi Arts Festival 2008, and in 2010 became Jatiwangi Artists in Residence Festival 2010.

During the period of residency, artists collaborated with their hosts and other artists to create new works of art for the festival event. Artists and villagers showcased their talents and were encouraged to use materials available from Jatiwangi.

Jatiwangi art Factory as the festival committee acted as a third party; a bridge to connect artists and their hosts by facilitating the exploration of ideas and collaboration between artists and hosts. The guest-host concept is intended to push the borders of art practice and to encourage the creation of art to reflect the ideas, traditions and issues of the community in combination with the ideas and artistic practices of the visiting artists.

Participants explored relationships between traditional-modern, rural-urban, global-local etc. The festival aimed to celebrate contemporary art as created within every day life, thus bringing art closer to the public.

The festival was in two stages. The first stage, is residency program in which the artists and villages explored ideas, created works and developed performances. There were meetings, talks & workshops. The second stage was the festival event, in which artists and hosts presented their works and performances.

Jatiwangi Arts Festival hoped to create awareness of contemporary art practice and to open other possibilities of creative activities. Besides bridging relationships and meeting between artists and the locals people, the festival opened international networks for the future of Jatiwangi.

The participation of invited artists benefits the audiences from the villages, in giving them the opportunity and exposure to observe the works that were presented in the festival, exchanged dialogues and brought together artistic talents from different countries and the region.
