A scientist strangely finds himself on an unmanned Norwegian research vessel and is doomed to roam the seas. Viewers follow him on his journey above and below deck, and like him, have difficulty determining where the real world ends and the world of imagination begins. Spinning, jolting, shuddering and hovering, the mysterious vessel gradually reveals its inner and outer anatomy and draws the scientist and the audience into its essence.

Vessel a joint project by artists Jasper van den Brink and Yasmijn Karhof, is a video installation consisting of three simultaneous projections on three screens positioned side by side. The film tells a circular story, with the end imperceptibly leading viewers back to the beginning. The story sometimes moves across the three screens, presenting a single panorama, while at other moments separate story lines are presented simultaneously, each on a separate screen.
The film was shot on the research vessel Johan Hjort of the The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research. Van den Brink and Karhof boarded in the Norwegian port of Bergen and travelled with the crew to Tromsø. From there, the ship crossed the Barents Sea to a small island called Bjørnøya.

  2. For the Kunst aan de Schinkel project the artist placed a lamp post directly in front of the Soledad Senlle Gallery of which the light switches on and off mysteriously. This site-specific installation blurs fiction and reality, which seamlessly intertwine.

  3. Moving video projection in which the projector makes exactly the same movements as the camera did during recording.

The clip is a fragment of the installation version which is about 20 minutes shot on several locations in Japan.

  4. Ten monitors showing videos recorded at various locations along the coast of Japan. All they start and end with the horizon running from left to right through the center of the frame. The videos are all exactly the same camera movements as if they dance hand in hand as a panoramic landscape. Your eyes become a periscope looking at ten different locations simultaneously.

  5. For the Prix de Rome Award I created a video installation centering on a downwards movement. The piece begins with a wall-sized projection of a blue-green space. At first, it's like looking down at a forest's leafy canopy. There is no horizon. While you look at the picturesque scene, the video projector gradually moves forward, over a white rails that extend from the white line in the image that runs from the lower edge of the frame. The cadre of the projection shrinks and you suddenly discover that what you thought was a forest is actually water. The pale shape of a little boat is bobbing on the waves. When the projector reaches the wall, you see that the artist is pulling in the camera connected to the white line. The picture fades to black and the projector slides back as though preparing for its next flight.
