  1. In the Thailand province of Trat, community-based tourism company Local Alike introduced us to three villages eager to provide a fun, educational, and unforgettable experience for travelers.

At the Ban Nam Chiao Ecotourism Community, we learned how to make kao griab ya-nah (shrimp and coconut on rice crisps) and tangme krop; planted mangrove roots in along the river; and met a woman who carries on her village's tradition of ngop hat making.

The Chong Changtune Live Eco-Museum introduced us to its signature "Spa de Chong" and taught us how to use palm leaves to make a check dam. We also visited a gem museum and got to do some ruby mining of our own.

Last but not least, the Huai Raeng Ecotourism Group showed us how they use their water and land's ample natural resources for food and goods. We learned more about the uses of nipa palm tree leaves and got to try our hand at making a betel leaf-wrapped rice packet. Then came demonstrations for making mangosteen rind soap in a bamboo mold, traditional Thai dessert called khanom chak, and coconut oil.

  2. Join host Ashley Colburn as she explores Hilo, Hawai'i, with a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant and Hilo local. Ashley's first stop is the iconic Hilo Hawaiian Hotel located right on Hilo Bay, which means guests can get a front row seat to the sun setting over Coconut Island and Mauna Kea. The hotel's rooms have been renovated recently; they are comfortable and have a balcony perfect for relaxing on while taking in the morning and evening views.

Hotel dining includes the Queen’s Court Restaurant and the Wai’oli Lounge and iCafé. The Hilo Hawaiian is about 10 minutes from downtown Hilo and is exactly what guests are looking for when trying to capture that laid-back feeling of the Big Island—comfortable rooms, a friendly staff, and easy access to local attractions!

Downtown Hilo is full of things to do! Everyone must visit the Hilo Farmers Market, where local farmers bring fresh fruits and vegetables and shoppers can either indulge for an easy lunch or buy food to stock up on for dinner. Shop the downtown area full of boutiques and art stores, eat lunch at a local restaurant, and be sure to check out the incredible wearable art at the Sig Zane store. Sig Zane is a local artist, surfer, clothing designer, and all-around cool guy. He and his son are the designers of the beautiful artwork passengers see on the livery of the Hawaiian Airlines’ ‘Ohana by Hawaiian planes.

Waipi’o Valley is a deep valley accessible by hiking or riding a four-wheel drive vehicle outside of downtown Hilo, Hawai'i. This is truly a beautiful place! Visitors to the area can go on a tour of the valley rim with RideTheRim Tours. It’s great fun, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a little muddy and wet!

  4. Insider Mike Siegel celebrated the Rocky Mountaineer's 25th anniversary by setting off on the train's "First Passage to the West" route, a two-day trip from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Banff, Alberta.

Mike's journey began with a day spent in Vancouver, where he took a Sea Safari zodiac boat tour with Sewell's Marina in picturesque Horseshoe Bay. Next, it was time to hop aboard the Rocky Mountaineer and admire the stunning Canadian countryside from the train's two-level, glass-domed coach (available to GoldLeaf class passengers). Mike's trip ended in Banff, where he headed straight for the Sunshine Village Ski Resort for a day on the slopes.
