  3. Manuela Ixtos Cotiy grew up in one of the most targeted regions and devastating periods of the Guatemalan Civil War. Today she devotes her life to social work focused on advocating for women and children's rights due to the great injustices she faced as a young, indigenous woman.

This piece is a part of Chispa (work in progress), a online transmedia presentation that follows indigenous female entrepreneurs who have the common goal of empowering themselves and other women in their communities.

  4. Trama Textiles is a 100% worker-owned weaving cooperative located in Quetzaltenango (Xela). The cooperative represents over 400 women, organized into 17 weaving groups, from five regions in Guatemala’s western highlands.

Unlike many of the textiles sold to tourists in Guatemala, members of Trama set their own prices to ensure fair wages for their work. Using the ancient craft of backstrap loom weaving, these artisans support their families and communities while simultaneously preserving the cultural traditions of the Maya people.

  5. Estrella de Mar is a line of original accessories handcrafted by economically disadvantaged artisans in Guatemala. It is a socially and environmentally conscious fashion brand that observes fair trade practices. The goal is to create opportunities for artisans by partnering with them to create original collections that utilize their traditional skills.

The nature of the artisan craftsmanship of the products means that many of the processes have been in use for thousands of years. Much of the fabric has been woven on the backstrap loom, a loom that is so ancient it pre-dates written history. From hand loomed and hand dyed cotton to handwoven and hand embroidered fabric, each step in the artisan process is completed with great skill and care.

This piece was made for Estrella de Mar (estrellademaronline.com) and was screened at various West Elm stores.
