  3. Title: The landscape cracks and I sink into a nameless current – What can I salvage? – I imagine you swimming in a clear blue lake – If only I could move past this

    Medium: Video Performance
    Year: 2012
    Duration: 34:30 / 9:33
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9

A lecture on biology and plasticity is disrupted by the unconstrained murmuring of the field beneath. The field enacts only itself, and the landscape is still cracking, even in the midst of all the rampant flowering.
Subtext inspired by Lisa Robertson's "Face."

    Full length video (34:30)
    Abbreviated video (9:33)

  4. Title: Red Feathered Egg Book
    Medium: Video Performance
    Year: 2012
    Duration: 25:41
    Aspect Ratio: 4:3

This project seeks to subvert expectations of intimate performance by resisting the viewer's desire to access the speaking subject's accurate, authentic, truthful account of herself, and instead to produce a multiplicity of possible truths. The project seeks to conflate intimacy and spectacle: to suggest that intimacy often makes a spectacle of itself, in the hyper-self-conscious removal of masks for the camera or the audience, and to explore the possibilities for a performative spectacle to produce intimacy with the viewer. The piece also includes elements of interactive video, simulating an intimate one-on-one performance: the performer speaks directly to the audience, asks questions with space for answers, and asks audience members to fill out a cognitive map as she leaves the screen with music playing.

  5. Title: Music Box
    Medium: Digital Video
    Year: 2012
    Duration: 6:31
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9

This video features two performers sitting at a table with an empty crystal cake platter, with a lace cloud hanging above. The two women enter the space and sit, one woman begins to sing and the other joins her for the final chorus, and then they exit.

I designed a screening of this project to make the movement and sound appear to be emanating from a tiny music box. I constructed a small light projection box with a cardboard box and a screen made from paper, and I projected the video with a tiny projector from behind the box’s screen. The tiny "music box" video projection is intended to suggest Victorian dollhouses and shadow boxes (and, more specifically, a 19th c. “Phasmatrope” screen-box), and to evoke a ghostly and magical quality.

For this project I excerpted documentation footage from a performance installation I made for Bookless in January 2012, entitled "Script."

Designed and directed by Katrina Schaag; performed by Eleanor Johnson and Katrina Schaag.
