Potential Replacement of Rare Earths in Magnetic Materials

Rare-earth permanent magnets are essential for applications in energy conversion devices including high power motors and generators that are the key components for systems in clean energy and renewable energy technologies, for instance electric vehicles and wind mills. However, there are growing concerns over the scarcity of rare-earth resources and supplies which has triggered increasing attempts to replace rare earths in hard magnetic materials. In this talk, I will review some related issues from the resources to emergent new magnetic materials including rare-earth nanocomposite magnets that may replace the conventional rare-earth magnets in the future.
