Systems Chemistry and Functional Nanodevices – an Introduction

Smart surfaces can be externally switched to bind or repel bacteria; tiny sensors can probe signaling of a single cell; one protein enveloped completely inside another can cause multistep chemical reactions. What do all of these have in common? Nanotechnology! Defined as one billionth of a meter, scientists are exploiting properties at the nanoscale to make an impact from energy to medicine. This talk will serve as an introduction to the power of chemistry to control the coatings on surfaces and nanotubes, leading to exciting possibilities with regard to applications of these materials. Self-assembly of molecules leads to exquisite control over surface properties. Lithography, a way to design structures and gradients, allows one to tailor the surface at the nanoscale. Nanomaterials can be coated with biological molecules to produce sensors capable of single molecule detection. These are some of the topics that will be introduced in this talk.
