Population extinction: Causes and Consequences
Sutirth Dey, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune

The factors that contribute to the extinction risk of a population can be broadly (but not very accurately) divided into two categories (see suggested reading for a brief description). The extrinsic causes include catastrophes, habitat destruction, climate change, etc: agents that are external to a population. On the other hand, intrinsic causes refer to those attributes of the population that contributes to its own extinction probability. I would restrict myself to the latter category, focusing on some theoretical predictions about extinction and corresponding laboratory verifications. Although my work is in the context of how spatial structuring and life-history attributes can contribute to the extinction probability of a population, I will also touch upon some other lines of investigation in the field.
