Correlated Electrons at Terahertz Frontiers

Imagine a system where one can open/close the band gap and consequent electronic properties at femtosecond timescales. What are the underlying physical principles that allow such a dramatic modulation of the electronic band structure? Can one exploit such phase transitions to build a new platform for solid state electronics? What new experimental techniques might need to be developed to study such problems requiring high temporal and spatial resolution? In this talk, I will present an overview of contemporary efforts to advance the frontiers in this area along with outstanding research challenges. The research topic is naturally cross-disciplinary that includes but not limited to materials synthesis, condensed matter theory and experiment and device physics. Experimental realization in areas intersecting ultra-high frequency electron devices in the GHz-THz range, storage memory elements, along with instrumentation to probe lattice and electron dynamics at comparable timescales will be presented. We will then consider future directions in this field that may serve as innovation platforms with potential for societal relevance.
