In the Summer of 2006 the Seattle Based "Film Company" asked me to cut a trailer for Guy Maddin's forthcoming feature "Brand Upon the Brain!" The film had recently been finished but had no distributor, and the producers wanted to include a promotional trailer with the press kit.

Sometime that autumn the Film Company delivered the finished film to me, along with Louis Nagin's temp narration and a MIDI music score. I watched the film and began cutting that night. My intent was to highlight one clear facet of the film's many, and polish it to a high shine. The result however was not one trailer, but four.

This was my first version. I called it "Memories" for reasons that should be clear after watching it.

Unfortunately my trailers had a rather short lifespan - I know Trailer C appeared on a Canadian website at one point. But when the film began garnering loads of critical praise for its live show, a new official trailer was cut to include Isabella Rossellini's narration a half dozen or so laudatory blurbs. And rightly so... the business of a film company is to promote a film, not obscure it. Still I have quite a fondness for my little vignettes, with Jason Staczek's original MIDI score intact (proof of authenticity!).

So, if you're a fan of "Brand Upon The Brain!" already, I hope you enjoy these moody little snapshots of this fantastic film. And if you haven't seen it, maybe these will convince you to track it down.
