1. With the help of Jana, the techGyrls program coordinator of the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland, and four creative mentors, Lily, Becca, Emily and Jules, I facilitated a PD workshop around the Square1 set of computational devices with 13 girls (4th grade) at the ACRON Woodland public School in Oakland, California.

This video shows the classroom at the session start.

"And you could still fix it and make another video and practice on it and if you like it. And when you're done practicing… you could practice a lot… and for your interview you would be all ready."

A: … all of them are number 1 for the movie…
B: … you need to guess which one is movie, or does it gonna say 'movie' or something?
A: Yeah … these two four would be the movie
B: But is it gonna say something about the movies, or you need to guess?
C: Like it would have a title. Right here, you would be talking about like… writers…
D: And the four people would come together and stick them together.
A: And the writers would like talk it out…
C: … while like the movie is going on, like of tigers running or swimming, taking care of their cups or something like that. And you could write how a mother takes care of her cups, and what happens, how do their know where to go back, where is their home, and stuff like that.
D: Like an animation movie, and they could have like people talking. You know how people talk about different kind of topics (in documentary movies). And they can task while the presentation is going on.

The girl says: "… and then you click it and it will show you all the videos … you can put I want this one to play first, this one second, this one third. And while they are standing like in the line, let's say this was the first one, and then they knew, like the second one (video) would come up after that one, and then the third one and the fourth one."

LEAD (Learning Design – Designing for Learning) is a 2 year project (fall 2012-2014) to bring design thinking to learning design and design expertise to the development process of technological learning solutions.
Learning situations vary widely, from classroom to conferences and to more informal learning settings. One thing common to all these situations is that the learning situation should be planned and prepared: this planning and preparing is closely analogous to design process.

Design methodology and thinking can be applied in the planning and preparing for education situation. Design thinking can significantly improve teachers’ and event organizers’ capabilities to engage learners and audiences, deliver the message, and successfully achieve the goals. Read more about design thinking and our theoretical outcomes in Research.

Project consortium is combination of Finnish leading universities with major international academic collaboration, active new start-ups and SMEs developing new solutions for educational institutes and organizations for tackling the 21st century information management and learning challenges, and high-impact testbeds that act as a catalyst for companies to trial their solutions and competencies. Project is partly funded by Tekes.
