The Local Traveler™

  1. Coming up this week on the Local Traveler™...

I make a stop at The Plaid Apron in Knoxville, Tenneessee where going local is something they live by! Chef Drew McDonlad teaches me not only how to make scrumptious local dishes but how to shop for them as well.

Next stop, Friends Drift Inn Kitchen just outside Pikeville, Ky. Joyce Pinson teaches us how to make some of the most delicious friend green tomatoes I have ever eaten and shows us her wonderful garden. She and her husband Charlie host a dinner for us in their big red barn and we share a giggle!

Last stop is Shelton Farms in New Market, Tn where they grow local produce as well as stone-ground flours. We go Blackberry picking with Danny Shelton who teaches us how to pick the very best ones! Eating fresh blackberries picked straight from the vine is like mana from heaven, so don’t miss out- join us on our travels next week!

  2. This week’s journey on The Local Traveler starts in Versailles, Ky at Wallace Station Deli and Bakery. We want to see first hand why Guy Ferrari calls the Big Brown one of his top five burgers.

Next stop Sevierville, TN to The Apple Barn and Cider Mill. This place is like Bubba Gump meets Johnny Appleseed.

Not only are apples delicious but they also help lower your blood pressure too… if only the Hatfields and McCoys would have eaten more apples. You guessed it, our next stop is Pikeville, Ky to get a VIP Hatfield and McCoy tour with the Pikeville City Tourism department and historian Reed Potter. I get so "fired up" about this feud that I decide I need to blow off some steam. Yep, that's me... with a gun! Be afraid, be very afraid!

  3. We’ve got Lincoln Fever! Our entire episode is dedicated to Honest Abe and his wife Mary Todd.
    Just in time for Oscars!

Despite coming from humble beginnings, and having less than one year of formal schooling, Abraham Lincoln became one of our nation's greatest presidents. And the feature film, Lincoln, has helped America’s most iconic and admired presidents to gain the attention of pop culture and historians alike.

Our first stop is at the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, Ky to learn more about Lincoln’s deep connections to the Bluegrass. We even get to hear the actual sound of Lincoln’s pocket watch… the same tick tock that Greg Smith from Spielberg’s sound team traveled to Kentucky to capture and use in the film.

We could sense Mary getting jealous so next we head over to the Mary Todd Lincoln House in Lexington, Ky. The same museum that Sally Field herself visited when she was getting into character for the film. We learn more about Abe’s first lady and see her childhood home. But that’s not all. Blue Sage Mercantile drops in to show us the art of producing historically accurate clothing… and I jump at the chance to play a part in their costumed fun!

Don’t miss this historical episode of The Local Traveler.

  4. This a commercial that The Lost River Pizza Company in Bowling Green, KY asked us to make using the footage from our segment on them for The Local Traveler™. Considering this was an absolute crew favorite from our shoots, we were more than happy to accommodate. We are now making this service available to any of the people, products or places we have profiled on the show!

  5. All three of our stops this week are at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. There is just so much to do here that we had to extend our stay! We will learn not only about the history of America’s largest and best-known communal society but we also get a taste for their way of life. In addition to eating the beloved food at Shaker Village, I also learn how to make a Shaker broom and saddle a horse for a wagon. You would think that would be enough to get a sense for how they lived but you know me… I wanted to take it a step further and really get into character!

We also get to see first hand why Harvest Fest is the best way to kick off the fall season! With loads of demonstrations and beautiful fall foliage, this season just might become your favorite. And as if that were not enough to convince you, Shaker Village is introducing brand new Autumn events like Fall on the Farm Weekends and Spirit Strolls to the Graveyard. So put Shaker Village on your bucket list for educational family fun!
