The 150th anniversary of Armstrong's Admirable Speech was delivered at the King's Hall, University of Newcastle as part of the British Science Festival. The Speech covers an astonishing array of subjects, from the birth of the railways to the discovery of the source of the Nile.

Inventor, scientist and engineer, he built Cragside in Rothbury, Northumberland, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and created an industrial powerhouse on the Tyne employing 25,000 people in the manufacture of hydraulic machinery, ships and armaments.

The Admirable Speech is a magisterial and inspiring analysis of human ingenuity and the industrial revolution. It was reproduced word for word in national and local newspapers and was widely circulated as a pamphlet. Much of its content still resonates today.

Among many prophetic insights, Armstrong accurately predicted the end of large-scale coal mining in Britain and urged his audience to look beyond fossil fuels to electricity, water power and other more sustainable ways to meet humanity’s ever-growing energy needs.

In collaboration with The Great Debate we devised a citizen journalism programme for young people and volunteers with the Great North Youth Voices. Sessions include critical thinking as well as camera skills and take place in Newcastle University.

Working together as a 'learning crew', small groups engage in the collaborative process of team reporting. Sessions include camera, audio, interview technique and functional skills. These skills are practiced and planned but much of our work takes place in the university and public domain. At debates young people are given an opportunity to experience a multi camera shoot and to interview in a professional environment.
