“I’ve led so many different lives,” muses Lucia Berlin (1936-2004). The daughter of a mining engineer, Berlin spent her childhood roving around stark mining landscapes in America and high society in Chile. As an adult she worked a series of odd jobs in New York City and Oakland, California while raising four sons and battling alcoholism. She also had a six-year stint as a highly regarded professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. These experiences shaped her short-story writing, much of which went unnoticed during her lifetime but received recent praise through 2015’s New York Times-bestselling A Manual for Cleaning Women: Short Stories.

In 2002, Sophie Constantinou interviewed Berlin and recorded her reading her favorite stories to her dear epistolary friend Kenward Elmslie, while reflecting on the power of friendship and collaboration. These moments were captured as part a series of short films catalyzed by Elmslie. His vision was to illustrate the artistic spirit of and collaborations among American writers, poets and artists from the late 50s to today.
