Ludosonica is a visual composing tool, developed in the research project "Playful Media Practices" by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW.
The increase of remote collaborative work requires a new set of tools for people in creative areas such as sound production. The goal of this project is to find playful methods that encourage creative collaboration in this field.
Social networks such as Facebook or Twitter support communication and information exchange across boundaries. Crowdfunding technologies work on a global scale and are often used for fundraising or design tournaments. There are many tools that support collaboration (Skype, Google Docs, WebEx).
However, the focus of existing tools mainly lies on supporting a single aspect in creative collaboration. For instance, there are many brainstorming applications, creativity technique tools, or project management software. The potential to foster actual participation in the creation process is still a challenge.
The project, Playful Media Practices investigates the influence on playful methods on creative collaboration. The emphasis lies on the development of a software prototype, Ludosonica, that encourages sound creation in a team. Different game elements are analyzed such as rules, roles, goals, or reward systems and how they encourage or inhibit creative work.
Since the collaborative creation of sound in a 3D space is novel and innovative, an explorative approach is used to develop the tool. Together with a focus group of selected students we design and test the software so that it can be applied as work tool at the FHNW.
At the end, Ludosonica will be a tool where students create their own sonic space and perform inside this room in a collaborative way. The performance can be recorded or visualized on a projector for audiences.
Duration of the project: January 1st 2014 – December 31st 2014
