Well, you may know by now how much I love filming different cultures and the weddings that take place within these different cultures. This particular wedding was a real treat! It was our first Vietnamese wedding and although much of the ceremony follows the same format of a traditional American Christian ceremony, the gift presentation that takes place before the formal wedding was really special to witness. On the day of the wedding, the procession of the groom's family is led in specific order to go and receive the bride at her house. In the procession, the groom, his family and friends bear elaborately decorated lacquer boxes, covered in red cloth. Inside these boxes are gifts representing the wealth that the groom's family will bring to the bride's family. Gifts of fruit, cakes, fabric, and an abundance of jewelry for the bride. Usually, the number of gift boxes is 5, 7, or 9. [The number must be an odd number. The gifts are covered by the red color paper or cloth. In Vietnamese beliefs, the odd number and the red color will bring luck to the young couple.] Members of the procession are introduced to the bride's family, and the bride's family introduces its members to the procession. The groom presents his gifts to the bride's family, and he is given permission to greet the bride, who is finally brought out. A formal tea and candle ceremony along with speeches can sometimes follow. It was a beautiful event to witness!Hieu and An share such a sweet relationship. Having been childhood friends, they grew up together and continued their friendship on into high school and college. The proposal was incredibly romantic as Hieu took An to the top of Sandia Crest at night during a meteor shower. Unbeknownst to An, all of their friends and family were there to surprise her with a canopy lit with lights! The meteor shower, Canopy lights and the city lights in the background created the perfect backdrop. Hieu proposed with a homemade pokeball ring box. What a creative fella! ;). We had a blast hanging out with these two and all or their friends and family. It was a beautiful wedding and one that we will always remember! Thank you An and Hieu for allowing us to capture your special day! We know you will have a long and happy marriage and can’t wait to see what adventures are ahead for you!! XOXO
