(1991)

The source materials for Captive In The White House were created during a residency at The Experimental Television Center, over the course of one day, during OPERATION DESERT SHIELD (1991). Captive was a real-time reaction to the American television media's preoccupation with war, sports, and the "cult" of the president.

Thanks to: Hank Rudolf, Sherry Miller Hocking and all the ETC folks. Isabelle Sigal, Naval Cassidy, Eric Marano and American Montage. Produced at the Experimental Television Center which is (was) supported in part by: the New York State Council on the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts, the NEA and by private contributions

+ More

The Luminists are an audio-video duo (Charles Cohen--audio; Eric Schefter--video) who perform live electronic sound and video works. Utilizing computer controlled video feedback and audio synthesizers, they create real-time performances.
The Luminists work is generally abstract in nature and is characterized by an exploration of the temporal interrelationship between video and audio.
The Luminists are working on expanding interaction between video and electronic sound on both technical and aesthetic levels. The audio and video systems are geared towards real-time control, allowing for improvisation (versus playback of sequences and animation).
For video, they utilize Amiga computers, video cameras, and a video switcher to generate and control live video feedback signals. For audio, they use the Buchla Electronic Music Performance System for sound and processing.
The Luminists have been working together since 1991, and have performed in many venues. They have released 6 videotapes, plus a compilation which are in the collections of The Kitchen, DCTV, and The Experimental Television Center. They have received assistance from the Electronic Arts Grants Program (presentation funds) of The Experimental Television Center, supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, and have completed 4 artistic residencies at The Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY
