  1. Peter Pike is a 68-year-old COPD sufferer that has been struggling with life-altering symptoms for many years.

If you would have asked Pike a year ago to describe his daily routine he would tell you that it takes him 30 minutes to take a shower, that he has difficulty walking from place to place, and that he easily gets winded when playing with his grandchildren. Besides the physical symptom of shortness of breath, like many COPD sufferers, Pike would tell you that his quality of life has been significantly impacted.

After receiving stem cell treatments, derived from his own body, Pike is feeling considerably better. His 30 minute showers now take less than 15 minutes, he is able to walk and get around without the constant use of supplemental oxygen, and he is now able to play with his grandchildren without feeling short of breath. Overall, Pike feels that his quality of life has improved significantly.

“My exercise tolerance has gotten better; I can exercise longer, and make it a little harder every day. I try to do a minimum of 45 minutes…my wife tells me my disposition is better. I’ve got my voice back, I’ve got more power in my voice which I didn’t have before. It’s been a positive experience,” Pike said.

  2. Jack Gile, 73, suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a progressive form of lung disease characterized by coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Jack received his first autologous stem cell treatment, meaning stem cells derived from his own body, at the end of July 2013.

“We didn’t notice any change until about four weeks out, and then all of a sudden he started feeling a lot better, and it just got better, and better, and better,” his wife, Terry Jo said.

Jack’s treatment outcome was so successful; they decided to visit Lung Institute again in October for a booster treatment in order to continue this positive momentum into the holiday season. Jack is now able to perform some of life’s simplest activities more easily and his overall quality of life has improved dramatically.

“We’re just really thrilled. Everyone has been so nice, and so interested in making sure that he gets better,” Terry Jo said.

  3. Sherry Bauer, a Nashville, TN resident and Lung Institute patient, suffers from COPD. Bauer came to Lung Institute a little over 4 months ago for a venous stem cell therapy for lung disease. In this procedure, Bauer's stem cells were stimulated to multiply in number and were then easily collected through the use of an IV. After collection, the stem cells were separated in the lab from her blood, and were then re-introduced back into her body where they could then cue regenerative pathways in her lung's damaged tissues.

Bauer began seeing results from her venous procedure a few months after treatment. She decided that she wanted to keep this positive momentum going and returned to Lung Institute recently to undergo another stem cell procedure. During her time at Lung Institute, we had the opportunity to sit down with Bauer and ask her about how she's feeling today compared to before her first treatment.

"I have seen some small improvements. I am now able to sit and talk without oxygen for as long maybe as 3 hours...before, I could not. I can go to a movie and take (the mask) off my face. That to me was just awesome," Bauer said. "My recovery time is quicker. Before, say if I got up and did something without the oxygen, it would take me 20 to 25 minutes to recover. Now, I can recover in 5 minutes. That may not (matter) much to some people that aren't aware of your situation, of what you go through every day, but it is good. To sit 5 minutes instead of 25 minutes is good to me."

Bauer reports that overall she feels healthier and has had a decrease in her exacerbations. She's been able to get back to cooking three or four days a week, whereas before she felt exhausted and didn't have the energy left to cook. These are the type of milestones that Lung Institute patients are achieving after their stem cell therapy for lung disease. It is our goal to improve our patients' quality of life. You too can get back to your everyday activities. There is no cure for lung disease, put that doesn't mean you have to let it hold you back from living.
