Mahabalipuram 2030

This video depicts a community of rag pickers located due east of the watch tower temple in downtown Mahabalipuram. The rag pickers in this video are poorly paid, informally settled, and lower caste.
Their community, however, is fairly well turned out boasting a mix of pucca, semi-pucca and kaatcha housing. Walking through their community revealed a dependence on livestock - but also revealed that even kaatcha dwellers had the occasional television and borewell.

We are 5 aspiring urban planners who set out to create a plan for a small coastal village called Mahabalipuarm. Mahab's is located 60km south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, and is known for it's amazing ancient temples, easy way of life, for tourism and of course as the preferred leisure site of well-to-do Chennaites. We visited India for two weeks in January to collect data, conduct land use surveys and administer in-depth interviews to Mahab's population. Two of us stayed in India for an additional three months! This site is a collection of the videos we took for documentary purposes as well as for our kickstarter backers. Some of the videos are taken in Mahabalipuram and others are taken in other parts of India. Your support made this possible and we all want to thank you for helping us get there!!
