Videos for UMMA Many Voices 2013

This video reflects a collaboration between between filmmaker Donald Harrison and The Heidelberg Project in Detroit, as part of the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)'s Many Voices project.
Inspired by Tyree Gyton's painting titled "Ups and Downs" at UMMA, Harrison recorded more than 100 interactive video portraits for this piece. These were captured through a unique mechanism – The Heidelberg Project Mobile Photo Video Booth – which Harrison designed and built with maker Robert Marshall. The booth captured people's faces on a green screen, interacting in real-time with digital effects and images from The Heidelberg Project.

A collection of videos created for Many Voices, a project of the University of Michigan Museum of Art (umma.umich.edu) in partnership with 7 Cylinders Studio (7cylinders.com). From comedic to dramatic, kinetic to poetic, personal to prophetic, these films represent the kaleidoscopic creativity and eclectic visions of members in the Ann Arbor area community.

Participating filmmakers ranged from ages 14–59 and included local students, artists, musicians, teachers, and community leaders. Each film was carefully crafted through a series of workshops and production sessions that took place throughout vastly different environments. Each film is under 5 minutes and reflects a brief insight into the creative possibilities of inspiration stemmed from great works of art.

These short films will also provide fresh ways for UMMA visitors to interact with the works of art within galleries themselves thanks to the newly installed free WiFi service which will broadcast them on demand to mobile devices activated by QR codes. They will also be added to UMMA's award winning DialogTable. This project was generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan.
