If a traveler loses the way through the Map of Love and wanders off down a side road, then s/he passes through the towns of Negligence, Inequality, Lukewarmness, Lightness, Forgetfulness and end up at the Lake of Indifference.

In collaboration with choreographer and dancer Gia T., we explored moving through this path as part of the 2014 Pittsburgh Biennial.

Map of Love is a is a multimedia project that takes us on a journey through an imaginary country called ‘Tendre’. This is a vast territory occupied by villages where people decide to live their lives. A few fortunate ones settle in towns such as Tenderness, while others decide to live with a view of the Lake of Indifference.

This project was part of the 2014 Pittsburgh Biennial and was in display at SPACE Gallery from Septmeber 26th through November 9th. There were several performances scheduled while the show was running. These performances were videotaped and are being uploaded to this channel and to the project's website as they become available. Each of these is an exploration of one of the towns on the map (mapoflove.net).

I am drawing upon various disciplines and creative languages to conjure the land of love. While the main anchoring element in the gallery was the website housing the piece, overall I am using choreographed movement, videography, performance, poetry, and music to bring all these elements together. Wonderful collaborators have helped me put this together: choreographers Beth Corning and Maira Duarte; and cinematographer Joe Seamans.

Why love? I came across Madeleine de Scudéry’s Carte du Tendre and I was fascinated both by her as a character as by the idea of representing such a complex topic using cartography. After all, love is a major drive in humans’ lives. It is the inspiration behind much of literature, music, visual art… it drives our lives and often times gives meaning to our short stay on the planet.

This is my attempt at exploring affection from an aesthetic standpoint, and is really just a good excuse to go deeper into the longings, pleasures and disappointments that result from one of the most complex of human emotions, love.
