As our student composers gain skills that help them use consonance and dissonance to express motion and meaning in music we move away from Noteflight and engage in collaborative experiences. The iPad, with apps like inHarmony and Playpad, help learners gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between melody and harmony by allowing them to easily manipulate chord progressions and melodic ideas while making creative choices. Additionally, there is a large component to these types of activities that allow for "messing around" - an important feature that leads towards new discoveries. Students will go on to their next composition equipped with new tools based on their work with the iPad. Tools that may have only been available to those few lucky students who have had years of piano study.
