How a different kind of city can economically succeed, with former Portland Mayor Sam Adams

The current issue of Atlantic Magazine includes an article, “Weird Is Good: What Portland's Economy Can Teach Every City in the World”. For more than 20 years – as Chief of Staff to Mayor Vera Katz, as a City Councilor, and then as Mayor, Sam Adams has been in the forefront of positioning Portland both as an economic force and also as an American city that is not only unique, but uniquely weird.

We asked Sam to drive over the hill and talk to us about Portland: what’s worked, what hasn’t worked, what’s been learned, and what would’ve been done differently the second time around.
