The research project “Towards (Im)measurability of Art and Life” addresses the ambivalence of measurement and measurability in contemporary realities, and questions the current tendency to enforce every dimension of our life into numbers in predefined categories.

As a part of research, an event, “Dialogue between an Artist and a Scientist” took place from December, 2013 to January, 2014. It featured three dialogues on the theme of measurement with different focuses. In each dialogue, one artist and one scientist were invited to give a presentation about their work which will lead into a discussion. The aim was to intersect two different approaches and ideas (artistic and scientific) about (the ambivalence of) measurement and measurability.

The first dialogue was on Politics on Measurement by Chihiro Minato (JP) and Sophie Houdart (FR) on Dec. 11, 2013. Minato is a professor at Tama Art University, Tokyo and a photographer with in-depth knowledge on anthropology. Sophie Houdart is a sociologist at the Laboratory of Ethnology and Comparative Sociology, Center for Scientific Research, Paris. She is currently conducting research on measuring danger. They presented their research and discussed the measurement hype, particularly in a relation to the Fukushima catastrophe.

More information about all dialogues can be found on the project website:
