  2. The Future of Psychedelic and Medical Marijuana Research

Forty years ago, a U.S.-led global backlash ended the possibility of researching potential beneficial effects of psychedelics and marijuana. Many studies had shown psychedelics to be useful for managing anxiety and depression in terminal cancer patients, for treating alcoholism and opiate addiction, and for catalyzing spiritual/mystical experiences. At the same time marijuana was found to be effective for relieving the nausea and vomiting often associated with cancer chemotherapy. Now that restrictions on research with these agents are easing, a new generation of investigators is continuing these studies, as well as looking at MDMA for PTSD, psilocybin for OCD, and marijuana for MS, chronic pain, PTSD and other conditions. Contemporary research on positive effects of psychedelics and marijuana needs to be carefully designed and conducted to avoid another backlash from anti-drug zealots.

This video is from Psychedelic Science in the 21st Century, a conference taking in place in San Jose, California on April 15-18, 2010. The conference was organized by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) in collaboration with the Heffter Research Institute, the Council on Spiritual Practices, and the Beckley Foundation.

  4. Greenflix boasts the hot, newly released film The Botany of Desire. The apple, the tulip and marijuana are the stars of the film adaptation of journalist Michael Pollan’s best-selling book of the same name. The film takes viewers to the apple orchards of Kazakhstan, the tulip markets of Amsterdam and a medical marijuana hot house. These famous plants share histories with the human desire – for sweetness, beauty, intoxication, and control over production. The developmental relationship between human beings and the plants is what Pollan calls the botany of desire. In this coevolution, Pollan argues human beings are as equally controlled as in control. “It makes just as much sense to think of agriculture as something the grasses did to people as a way to conquer the trees,” he writes. Producer and director of The Botany of Desire, Michael Schwarz has produced numerous documentary films and won several Emmy awards for his work.

  5. This is a segment from a feature film I am currently working on called "Lynching Charlie Lynch" about the controversies surrounding medical marijuana and Federal marijuana policy in the United States. Irv Rosenfeld is one of only 4 surviving patients who sued the Federal Government in the 1980's for access to medicinal marijuana. Once each month Irv receives a tin from the Federal Government filled with up to 300 marijuana cigarettes - for free, from Uncle Sam on taxpayers dollars! Crazy, you say? Take a look at the rough cut of the video and tell me what you think....

Note, the audio is still a temp track and some of the cutting is still rough, but I am eager for feedback. So please, what do you think? The feature film is coming which explores much more than this.
