Design Dialogues / MetroWest

I have been publishing and writing about design since 1986 when
I founded Design Times.

But even after such a long span,
I find I’m always learning something new,
especially from my architect friend Clement Van Buren.

This video catches Van Buren in the final stages of renovating
his own house. A case of the “cobbler’s children have no shoes” this
renovation was overdue, even by bachelor standards.

I think his insights are overdue in the mass culture, as well.

I have been publishing and writing about design since 1986 when
I founded Design Times.

But even after such a long span,
I find I’m always learning something new,
especially from my architect friend Clement Van Buren.

The video that inspired DESIGN DIALOGUES is this one.

It catches Van Buren in the final stages of renovating
his own house. A case of the “cobbler’s children have no shoes” this
renovation was overdue, even by bachelor standards.

I think his insights are overdue in the mass culture, as well.

Home design TV is all too often an

entertaining but not-so-subtle mix of pep talk

prime us for a sales pitch from advertisers:

from paint to pooper scoopers.

Rather, we are attempting to create a

relaxed forum where important ideas and

experiences can be aired between

professionals and homeowners.

The results of hiring a contractor before taking this

important first step are often disappointing.

How to let in more light, but

maintain some privacy? Gain space to

work in the kitchen, but have family

and friend close by? Collect

souvenirs, but avoid

clutter?

Naturally, the recommendations

found here assume no liability.
