Shot in Pixelvision, this 17 minute award-winning experimental short details the physical and psychic recuperation of the maker from a physical assault. With music composed and performed by the director himself, this piece explores the minutiae of the director's convalescence in 1991 from jaw and brain surgery. Using the strengths of both the Fisher-Price PXL-2000 camera and the Casio SK-1 keyboard - both thought to be nothing more than children's toys - GLASS JAW is a harrowing account of the director's movement into adulthood through a traumatic event.

GLASS JAW was one of the first things I made over 20 years ago and it remains the piece through which people know me best. The melding of aural, verbal and visual elements is some of the best work I have done. This melding is what is closest to my heart when creating media, and I try to embrace that in the media I make, even if it is strictly media for money. I joke that I am like a doctor in that I am affiliated with a hospital (the PBS station for which I work) but with a private commercial practice (PORTIA PRODUCTIONS), as well as a lab where I experiment (the results of which can be found on this page) and a long and varied career teaching at workshops and universities.
