This was done at a time (1997) when reliable, high quality SD production using computer based editing systems was not as widely available as it is today. Rendering times were prohibitive using After Effects 3.1, and rates at these editing suites made this piece as short (less than 3 minutes) as it is. However, there was no other cost effective way (then creating and processing in After Effects and outputting to the AVID) to create the effect of colorful letters blooming the same way the colors on the sheep in Ireland bloomed in the rain.

GLASS JAW was one of the first things I made over 20 years ago and it remains the piece through which people know me best. The melding of aural, verbal and visual elements is some of the best work I have done. This melding is what is closest to my heart when creating media, and I try to embrace that in the media I make, even if it is strictly media for money. I joke that I am like a doctor in that I am affiliated with a hospital (the PBS station for which I work) but with a private commercial practice (PORTIA PRODUCTIONS), as well as a lab where I experiment (the results of which can be found on this page) and a long and varied career teaching at workshops and universities.
