These clips show 1 class period, 3 weeks into the semester in Dwain Desbien's calculus-level physics course at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in fall 1999. 1/3 of the students had never had physics before! The articulate young man in yellow is a music major. The movie is a professionally edited tape.
This channel showcases teachers using Modeling Instruction (and other reformed physics teaching methods) in their classrooms.
Instead of relying on lectures and textbooks, Modeling Instruction emphasizes active student construction of conceptual and mathematical models in an interactive learning community. Students are engaged with simple scenarios to learn to model the physical world.

Also included are several videos used in the RTOP project (Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol). RTOP is an observational instrument that can be used to assess the degree to which mathematics or science instruction is “reformed.” More information about RTOP at: http://physicsed.buffalostate.edu/RTOP
Heads up: the shoutbox will be retiring soon. It’s tired of working, and can’t wait to relax. You can still send a message to the channel owner, though!
