    This new commission enables audiences to encounter England’s forests anew through an immersive virtual reality experience, told by the inhabitants of the forest. A 360º film, it is an artistic interpretation of the sensory perspectives of three species natural to the site.

    Creative collective Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF) delight in exploring the line between virtual and real-world experiences. In this work they use the mask of virtual reality to explore different perspectives of familiar landscapes. Through observing the function of animal sight - a dragonfly experiences life over 10 times faster than a human and in 12 colour wavelengths (a human in a combination of three) - the film & accompanying soundtrack are a speculation of an alternative reality.

    The forest & animals were captured using techniques such as lidar & CT scanning, photogrammetry and a bespoke-built 360º aerial camera. Footage was processed using custom software to create the landscapes explored in the work. The film is set to a binaural soundtrack using audio recordings sourced from the surrounding woodland.

    The show was designed and controlled directly from the Cinema 4D timeline using a custom python plugin I created to interface with the lights.

    Adam Heslop (pixelsinprogress.com) at Jason Bruges Studio (jasonbruges.com) developed Feather Light to explore the power behind the combination of Cinema 4D and moving-head lights. Creating beautiful featherlike and mesh patterns to a soundscape by Nat Self. The piece was envisioned for a live event and this video shows the testing in the studio.

    Adam has a degree in Industrial Design from Northumbria and specialises in 3D visualisation. Adam works on a widerange of global art projects, using innovative techniques with architectural visualisation tools.

    Nat Self has been on the cutting edge of electronic music for the past ten years. As a producer he has worked with a plethora of renowned artists such as Spoek Mathambo and neo-soul legend Omar. Nat has djed around the world and has held a residency at the seminal Panorama bar in Berlin.

  3. R&D Excerpts 1, May 2015

    A collaboration between choreographer Alexander Whitley and visual artist Memo Akten. Pattern Recognition (working title) is a piece for two dancers and light, exploring themes of learning, memory, representation and recognition. The piece explores these themes not only artistically and choreographically, but also in the underlying technology driving it, based on artificial intelligence and machine learning. Explored in both a human context, and a machine context, each approach informing the other.

    Skyline is a code-based generative music video I directed and programmed for the track Skyline (itunes.apple.com/us/album/skyline-single/id1039135793) by Karma Fields (soundcloud.com/karmafields). The entire music video consists of multiple stages that are programmed and generated using Processing.

    One of the core principles for generating the visual patterns in Skyline is Voronoi tessellation. This geometric model dates back to 1644 in René Descartes’s vortex theory of planetary motion, and has been widely used by computational artists, for example, Robert Hodgin (vimeo.com/207637), Frederik Vanhoutte (vimeo.com/86820638), Diana Lange (flickr.com/photos/dianalange/sets/72157629453008849/), Jon McCormack (jonmccormack.info/~jonmc/sa/artworks/voronoi-wall/), etc.

    In Skyline's systems, seeds for generating the diagram are sorted into various types of agents following certain behaviors and appearance transformations. They are driven by either the song's audio spectrum with different customized layouts, or animated sequence of the vocalist, collectively forming a complex and organic outcome.
