  3. The Mountaineer Scouts tried to climb Mt. Baker (10,781') and Mt. Rainier (14,410') back-to-back in August of 2014.

The weather didn't cooperate on Mt. Baker. Poor visibility on the glacier led us to abandon the climb and head down to Mt. Rainier.

We reached Paradise late in the day and did not clear the Ranger Station until after 5 pm. We set out up the mountain and watched a spectacular sunset as we began hiking up the Muir Snowfield. Hiking well into the night, we reached Camp Muir at 10,000 feet on Rainier, set up our tent, had very late dinner and went to bed. The next morning we discovered that two team members were suffering from a savage stomach flu. They were laid out on their backs on the Cowlitz Glacier for the next 24 hours. For the rest of the day, 12 year-old Mountaineer Scout Keir tended camp and kept his sick team-mates hydrated by chipping ice off the glacier to make them tea. The next morning, still racked with stomach flu symptoms, the team had no choice but to shoulder their packs and gingerly make their way back down the massive mountain.

Those mountains aren't going anywhere. We'll be back!

  4. Here's the two back-to-back weeks of the 2014 Mountaineering Camp: Rogers Pass.

The first week's team made it to the summit and the second week lost their chance to go for the summit when when a fierce Arctic storm blew in and pounded the cabin with 100 kph winds and snow (in July).

The participants for week one were from West Vancouver and Golden, B.C., and the participants for week two were from West Vancouver, B.C., and Okotoks and Red Deer, Alberta.

  5. A team of 11-17 year-olds from North and West Vancouver, B.C., Golden, B.C., and Fall River, Nova Scotia, met for the first time at the Alpine Club of Canada`s A.O. Wheeler Cabin in the valley floor of Rogers Pass. They spent the night getting to know each other and then headed up the mountain together for a week in the alpine. Upon arriving at the ACC`s Asulkan Cabin, the team was met by the chopper from Golden bringing up their heavy load of food for the week. After three days of training they were ready for a try at the summit. Waking before dawn the next morning, the team geared up and headed out to climb Youngs Peak. This is their story...
