The Museum of Football is a museum about Brazil’s history. A history that has turned football into one of the country’s most acknowledged cultural manifestations. Brazilians have passionately embraced football as their own. The Museum will help us to understand football, a British, white elitist sport that gradually acquired new contours: It became Brazilian, popular, half-bred and an important part of our culture.
We are located in an area of 74.280ft² under the grandstands of one of the most beautiful Brazilian stadiums, the Paulo Machado de Carvalho Municipal Stadium – otherwise known as the Pacaembu Stadium, located in front of Charles Miller Square in São Paulo.
This was a joint initiative by the Government of the State of São Paulo and City Hall – through the Municipal Department of Sports and the municipal tourism entity, São Paulo Turismo – and was conceived and completed by the Roberto Marinho Foundation. We are part of the São Paulo state network of museums.
To visit the Museum of Football is to revisit Brazilian history in the 20th century, awakening us to the fact that our habits, customs and behavior are inseparably linked to the ascension of this sport. Football has helped to create the Brazilian identity, just as Brazilian culture helped transform football. The stars that Brazil was able to produce represent our culture as much as the icons of the arts, literature, theater and music.
This had led us to worship football once and for all as a living, inventive and exciting culture. Football is part of our heritage and needs to be preserved, cultivated and glorified in its complexities and virtues.
