1. WordPress.com is the 7th most popular website in the U.S. and the company that runs it, Automattic, Inc., is valued at $1.1 billion. Their success is based on challenging our biggest assumptions about how creative work is done: all employees work remotely, no one uses email, preferring blogs and chatrooms; there are few schedules, fewer meetings, and fewer rules, with designers and developers launch new ideas and features dozens of times a day. Berkun went behind the scenes as a manager at the company to write the popular book The Year Without Pants: WordPress.com & The Future of Work (An Amazon.com best book of 2013). He'll share the big lessons he learned and offer challenges to anyone who manages or leads creative people.

  2. You can’t design an end-to-end experience unless you organized for it, too. To create coherent vision and transform end-to-end experiences, multidisciplinary teams need structures—goals, roles, and practices—that support awareness, understanding and ownership of the end user's journey. In this talk learn how Airbnb relies on journey mapping to inform better decisions and outcomes from experience design, and how they've organized their rapidly growing teams to better support their user's journey every step of the way.

  4. Organizations are wired to resist change. Even the most promising possibilities are often met with an automatic block: "yeah, it's a great idea. but, that would never work here." Short term thinking, politics and capability gaps are just a few of the automatic antibodies that naturally attack the early seeds of innovation and change. What can design teach us about overcoming these patterns of resistance? How can we create cultures that are incentivized and open to taking a longer term view and neutralized negative politics to be more productive environments for creative collaboration? Author and educator Lisa Kay Solomon will explore design-led leadership practices that can turn even some of the most toxic cultures of negativity into environments of hope that are best possibilities.

  5. As design becomes an increasingly valued discipline, a new class of UX leadership roles
are emerging. UX directors are being called on to organize the complex flow of a design team's research, vision and execution. It is a great time to be leading product design, and opportunities abound.

Moving to a UX leadership role in a new company, however, is not without its challenges and pressures. In this talk, Dave VanEsselstyn will discuss his recent job transition (from 8 years directing UX at Amplify to 5 months directing UX at MakerBot) in light of expectations, bumps and successes, and offer concrete suggestions about how to prepare for one's first 90 days in a new UX role.
