    Hi. I'm Robert Proctor. I want to give you one tip today on how to avoid your new network marketing, multi-level marketing, party planning company from being shut down.

    We're going to use PayPal or PayPal Pro, Square, Stripe when we launch our new company. This is a question or a comment that we get from clients all the time. Most of the time, we're working with new startup companies, and they're thinking that they can use a payment gateway such as Stripe or PayPal to run all of their sales through. What most clients don't realize is that PayPal, Stripe, and Square do not permit multi-level marketing companies. It sounds like a really easy way to get your company up and going. You can automatically connect it in. You can start selling your products and services.

    Here's the challenge. If you look at the terms and conditions, policies and procedures in anything such as Square, PayPal, and Stripe, what you're going to find out is we do not permit certain types of pyramid schemes, multi-level marketing schemes. What's going to happen here, and you're going to do it, one of our clients is going to do it, it happens all the time, they're going to use a PayPal. PayPal's going to let you run for a couple of weeks, maybe even a couple, three months.

    Here's what's going to happen. One day, all of a sudden, your money's not going to show up in your bank account. They're going to freeze your account. They're going to lock onto that money for 18 months. Most of the time, you're not going to get that money back. Here's what's going to happen. You started using PayPal. You got some momentum. You got distributors signing up. You got customers signing up. All of a sudden, you wake up one morning, your PayPal, your Square, your Stripe.com account is closed down. Your distributors can't join. Your customers can't buy products. You can't pay commissions. You're out of business. That's not what you want to use to run your company.

If you use one of these, you're going to lose the momentum.

    Do you have any sales leaders? Any heavy hitters? Have any national sales directors that you can bring to our company? This is a question I get asked almost every week when I work with a new or existing startup network marketing, or multi-level marketing company. They're asking me if I have any leaders or heavy hitters that I can refer to their business.

    Hi, I'm Robert Proctor, and for the past 20 years I've been involved in launching more than a 1000 network marketing companies. And today, only 10% are still in business. I want to give you the tips and tools to help you success and avoid the failure of that other 90%. You know, of course because I've been involved in this industry for 20 years, I know a lot of heavy hitters. I know a lot of leaders. I know a lot of guys that are making a million, 2 million, 3 million, $8 million a year. Are they gonna come join your business? No, they're not going. They're already successful. And if somebody that I know is interested in leaving their existing company to come to your company, do you really want somebody that's gonna then leave your company and go to another company?

    See, those are called shiny balls on the tree. And every time you put out something that wants to invite somebody to join your company, it's a shiny ball. And the next company that puts out a shiny ball that's even brighter than the one you put out, they're gonna leave your company, and they're gonna go join that other company.

    Here's what I can tell you from 20 years in this industry. You want to look and cultivate distributors from the grassroots. You want to find the guys that haven't succeeded in five, 10, 15 companies. Or the guys that are so hungry because they want to buy a new house, they want that new car, they want to take their family on a vacation. Guys that if you just gave them, or women, if you just showed them how to make an extra 500 or a $1000 a month, that's what's gonna change their lives. Don't talk about the millions of dollars, talk about how 500 or a $1000 a month is gonna change their lives.

    So here's what I can suggest to you. Be passionate about your product, fall in love with your product. Breathe, eat, smell, taste your product. Share that product with other people and the value that that product brings. Here's what's gonna happen. You're gonna create people that love your products too. And if they love your product, they're gonna want to become distributors. Those distributors, those are the leaders that you're looking for in your company, not the guys that are making a million dollars a year, and every few months they switch to another company.

    Or have a downline of 10,000 people that they're gonna bring to you. And then the next shiny ball that has another company or another product. They're gonna leave you and go over there. So use a grassroots movement. Fall in love with your product. Share your product with other people. They will share it. And at the end of the day, you're gonna be successful. That's my tip for you today.

    Hi, I'm Robert Proctor, and over the last 20 years, I've been involved in the launch of over 1,000 network marketing companies. And over this time technology has changed, the industry has changed, the rules and regulations have changed in the industry. Used to be, years ago, you didn't have to charge sales tax when you were an online business. These days, I get asked the question by clients every week, "Do we need to charge sales tax because we're an online company?" The answer is yes.

    Where other company owners that say, "We don't need to charge sales tax. We don't have any distributors in Dallas. Or we don't have any customers in California. We're an online company." The biggest company in the industry, Amazon.com, used to be the one that didn't pay sales tax, didn't want to pay sales tax. They were the biggest proponent against online sales tax. Well, just in the last couple years, Amazon is now the biggest proponent for charging sales tax. If you're an online company, and you're selling a product or a service, most likely, you need to be charging sales tax.

    In fact, every state, every city is expecting to get their sales tax revenue from you. You may not have any distributors in California, or Boise, Idaho, but you're shipping product to a customer in one of those cities. The answer is yes, they're expecting your sales tax. These days, there are even states that have hired outside accountants to come in and have products shipped into their state just to see if the companies that are shipping their products in are actually charging sales tax.

    Do you need to charge sales tax on services? Depends on the services that you're offering. Here's something that's interesting. Did you know that shipping companies like FedEx, UPS, actually charge sales tax for certain states that you're shipping products and goods into?

    Do you want to avoid your network marketing company being shut down by the FTC or the attorney generals in your state?

    Hi, I'm Robert Proctor and for the last 20 years, I've been involved in the launch of more than a thousand network marketing companies and we've consulted with companies on how to avoid being shut down by the FTC, avoid having the attorney generals looking at you, and avoid having to go to a court and have a judge order you to change your compensation plan, and here's the number one reason. You're going to require your distributors to purchase your products that you're then going to pay commissions upon to join or participate in your business opportunity.

    First of all, let me tell you, I'm not an attorney, I'm not a paralegal, but being in and involved in this industry for 20 years and a thousand companies and working with some of the biggest network marketing attorneys in the industry, I can tell you this. There's a real simple rule. I've said it this way a thousand times, and another thousand times in the future. You cannot require the purchase of a product or service for which you are then going to pay commissions upon to your distributors to join and/or participate in your business opportunity.

    Is there a way around this? Absolutely. Have one option purchase that does pay commissions on products and have one required purchase that's a minimal amount that you don't pay any commissions on. Here's what I actually suggest to my clients, and if you've ever consulted with me, you've heard this. Have three different enrollment options. One, $49 to $99, you don't pay any commissions upon that. The next one, $129 to $199 that's an optional purchase that you do pay commissions on. Or, the next one, a $299 to $499 product that you do pay commissions upon. Those last two are optional products. What's going to happen? 20% of your people are going to go to the $49 product, 20% of the people are going to go to the high-end product, and 60% of the people are going to go to your middle product. Let's face it, that's the product that you want people buying.

    So, the answer is no, you can't require the purchase of a product that you pay commissions upon. I hope you got some good information from this. I want to give you the tips and tools to help you succeed and avoid the failure of that other 90%. Today I want to talk to you about that one necessity that, in order to run any type of network marketing company, multi-level marketing company, party plan company, you have to have, and without this, you're not going to be able to run your business. What is that? That's a merchant account. A merchant account is a way for your company to enroll distributors and sell products, because you can accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. You know you're going

    to need a merchant account, you know you're going to need some way to transact your business, to enroll your distributors to autoship your products because e-commerce and money is the most important thing, it's the lifeblood of your company. Here's what most people don't know. Getting a merchant account for a multi-
    level marketing company is completely different than getting a merchant account for a retail company, a restaurant, a bar, or really any other type of product or website that you're selling online. Why? Because network marketing companies are categorized, hate to say this, in the same category as gambling and adult entertainment. You have a higher risk that your distributors are going to charge back your merchant account, they're going to charge back their credit cards, a greater chance that somehow a customer got a product or service that they weren't interested in, and they're going to return that product or service. What most people don't realize is that a merchant account is really a bank that is loaning you money for up to 12 months, and I'll tell you why in a second, up to 12 months. They're going to loan you money for up to 12 months for about 3 to 4%. That 3 to 4% is what the merchant account or payment gateway company is going to charge you on each transaction. That's also really important to know, because as you're building your compensation plan, and building the business model of your company, you need to take into account that 3 or 4% and sometimes those merchant account companies are going to charge you a rolling reserve, meaning for three to six months they might not give you your money back.

    Here's the reason why I said they're loaning it to you. Up to 12 months, they can charge that money back 3%, I don't know about you, it's hard to go out there and get a 3% loan, so when you go to apply for a merchant account company, you've got to be transparent with them that you are a network marketing company, a party plan company, you're selling products through network marketing, even though you can say, "It's just a retail company, it's just a direct sale" at the end of the day, if you're paying more than two levels, you're a network marketing company.

The last thing is when you go to get a merchant account, try to get two or three of them, so that you've always got a rollback if one does go down, or one fails.
