National Parks HD

  1. Shot in August 2011, I carried my video gear in backpacks over 6 miles up to elevations of 13,000 ft. to get some of these shots. Special thanks to Dr. Nathan Rank and the White Mountain Research Station for invaluable guidance. The petroglyphs in this video are over 1,000 years old. Some of the locations include Mono Lake, White Mountain, Bull Lake, Long Lake, Crooked Creek Station, Barcroft Observatory, Chocolate Mountain, and Yosemite National Park. The Bristlecone pine trees were shot in an area where some of the trees are over 4,000 years old and still alive. Mono Lake was formed around 760,000 years ago. Also, views of Bishop Pass. Music is Milhaud and is polytonal.

PLEASE WATCH IN HD FULL SCREEN w/SOUND. It is a much better viewing experience. Hopefully you have a 1080P monitor and good connection. If not, bug a friend or colleague that does. It is worth it.

Landscapes: Volume 2 is the second of a three part series. Every frame of this video is a raw still from a Canon 5D2 DSLR and processed with Adobe software. In Volume 2 I again show off my beautiful home state of Arizona and I also made several trips to Utah. This video has some iconic landmarks that we have seen before. I felt that showing them again with motion controlled HDR and/or night timelapse would be a new way to see old landmarks.

Sales Pitch: I would now have to say that my timelapse skill set is very complete. The amount of knowledge I have gained through research, testing, and shooting experience is astounding. From moon phases to high dynamic range to motion control rigs to noise reduction, you would have a tough time finding someone with more overall knowledge of timelapse.

Most of the motion control for this video was done with the Stage Zero Dolly by Dynamic Perception. Once I got comfortable using the DP dolly I fell in love. I can set up shots now in much shorter times. More importantly for me, it is much smaller and much more portable than my homemade motion control. Without it, shots like the Delicate Arch shot in Utah would be nearly impossible due to the length of the hike. Buy the Stage Zero Dolly if you are looking for quality, inexpensive, easy-to-use motion control.

In addition to the Stage Zero, I also used a three axis motion controlled CamTram. The CamTram is the most versatile dolly I have ever used. Its applications are only limited by your creativity. The CamTram has virtually no weight limit. I was able to achieve shots that dolly-in with the camera just over the ground because of the CamTram's ability to hold heavy counter weights.

Thank you to the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff for allowing me to shoot there. They were very friendly and helpful.

Saving the best for last . . . thanks to my wonderful wife Laura. Not only does she put up with and support this crazy passion of mine, she helped out on many of these shots. I think I'll keep her :-)

  3. Making route from Cottonwood Lakes to the summit of Mount Whitney--the highest point in the contiguous United States--was one of the toughest challenges in my life. My pack weighing in at 85 pounds--67lbs when exiting, I traveled and documented my journey using the following:

    Body: Canon 5D Mark II
    Lens: Canon 24mm f/1.4 L USM II
Filter: 77mm Fader ND Mark II
    Batteries: 6 Canon LP-E6 + 18 AA Energizer Adv.-Lithium
    Memory: 5 Delkin 32GB CF X450
    Tripod: Vangaurd Alta 264AO+
Track Head Mount: Manfrotto Mini Ball 494RC2

Special thanks to Dynamic Perception for the Stage Zero Dolly. I received my kit and 3 rechargeable batteries with only a day to spare before my trip. This was the first time I've used the dolly, and didn't have time to really practice with it, so more videos coming soon.

Unfortunately the weather was too perfect---I.E. no clouds were available until the last day of my trip, so sorry if some of the time-lapses may seem rather empty. Along my journey I was accompanied by two friends of mine: Anthony & Bryson. We made this trip an awesome 5 day 4 night adventure from Sequoia National Park to Inyo National Forest. We camped at the following locations and altitudes before summiting Mt. Whitney(14,497ft - 14,505ft.):

    Night 1:
    Cottonwood Lakes(4 & 5)
    Alt.: 11,000 ft.

    Night 2:
    Lower Soldier Lake
    Alt.: 10,800 ft.

    Night 3:
    Lower Crabtree Meadow
    Alt.: 10,330 ft.

    Night 4:
    2 hills above Guitar Lake
    Alt.: 12,050 ft.

I rented the lens used for this trip from:

Along my journey to the summit of Mt. Whitney I was stopped by dozens of travelers asking what I had strapped to the side of my pack--the 6ft aluminum track from the dolly kit--and what I was doing with it. (I had some good laughs) Not one person knew its purpose or what it was, but hopefully Dynamic Perception plans on releasing a more compact version of the Stage Zero Dolly relatively soon.

I selected this spot to visit in particular in hopes of seeing mountain goat. We were not disappointed. One surprise however was that my first shot of mountain goats turned out to be big horn sheep (first shot after opening). It was not till reviewing my footage several days later that I realized these were big horn ewes and not scraggly shedding mountain goats as I had first thought.

Reading about these two species after filming this I discovered an interesting sub plot. The goat is allegedly displacing the sheep. It's a more aggressive species and is thought to perhaps carry disease that the sheep are susceptible to. The Bighorn have declined by about 10% over the last ten years and the Goat's territory has expanded (although wildlife officials are attempting to keep it in check).
