The country’s biggest ever snail trail has started as we launch a nationwide search for a tiny snail normally found in the Mediterranean.

This pretty little snail, which has no English name, has turned up at two of our properties - Brownsea Island in Dorset and Cliveden in Buckinghamshire.

However, they had remained hidden from the gaze of naturalists for more than 100 years after hitching a ride from warmer climes to the UK in the nineteenth century.

As a result of the discoveries we will be carrying out an audit of our properties. We need your help to establish the true extent of the snail’s distribution and population.
Have a look at old stonework and items in gardens of grand houses and see if you can find the snail. If you do, take a picture and upload it to our flickr page telling us where and when the picture was taken.

Don't have a Flickr account? Email us your photo to including your name and when and where the photo was taken and we'll upload it for you.
