Fifth graders write music inspired by the Native Americans. This goes along with their Native American studies in their regular classroom.
First students write a legend about something the Native Americans might have been concerned with. Some students choose to write about natural disasters such as droughts or tornadoes. Some students prefer to write about hunting or spirits.
Next, students write four 4-beat phrases that are inspired by their legend. They then add rhythm to their phrases. Once they have a solid rhythm notated in notes and rests on their staff paper, they are allowed to get a set of tone bells to experiment with a pentatonic scale to create their melody.
Students write their melody on the staff and arrange their songs on the computer.
Finally, the students add an accompaniment to the songs using unpitched percussion instruments. We teach the song to the class and they perform it as I record them. The students then create a movie file in Windows Movie Maker, adding images of their song and legend, audio that we recorded and titles. Enjoy!
