OB in HD

  1. The fourth installment in our series of clips from Stick Figure's reggae throwdown at the Ocean Beach Farmer's Market on March 31, 2010.

This segment features two jams, a cover of the Bad Brains classic Leaving Babylon and the first live performance of Stick Figure's Livin' It, from the 2009 album Smoke Stack. Highlights include happy fans, a dancing kid, and plenty of roots, dub, and good vibes.

Unfortunately, the tail end of Livin' It is not included because of issues with the camera's tape. But have no fear - more music from that wonderful Wednesday in OB is on tap in upcoming segments from the show.

  3. Stick Figure played a terrific hour-long set at the Ocean Beach Farmer's Market on March 31, 2010.

In the opening 10 minutes, both guitarists suffered from broken guitar strings, but the band kept the music coming seamlessly and established an enjoyable vibe. This segment includes two songs, Wonderful World and Ring the Alarm.

  4. When the OB in HD crew first caught a Stick Figure performance at June 2009's Ocean Beach Street Fair, it was love at first bassline.

The band's take on reggae combines masterful musicianship with smart, soulful lyrics and a deep understanding of the roots and dub genres to deliver some incredibly enjoyable music. So after that initial encounter with the Stick Figure sound, we quickly put the band at the top of our favorites list, bought their albums, and kept an eye out for an opportunity to film another live performance.

It took awhile, but we finally got our chance. This clip, from last week's Ocean Beach Farmer's Market, features ten minutes of highlights from Stick Figure's enjoyable hourlong set, which kept the crowd dancing and put smiles on faces up and down Newport Avenue.

Songs you'll hear include Livin' It and Hawaii Song from Stick Figure's newest album, Smoke Stack. You'll also get a taste of So Good and We Get High from 2008's Burnin' Ocean as well as Stick Figure's take on some timeless reggae classics.

Stick Figure is front man Scott Woodruff on lead guitar, Brendan Dane on bass, Todd Smith on drums, and Kevin Bong on keys. For more information, visit stickfiguremusic.com/

  5. The Ocean Beach Historical Society held its annual Wisteria Party on the first day of spring, Saturday, March 20, 2010.

Each year, the party takes place at Ned Titlow's home on the 4700 block of Niagara Avenue. The purple wisteria canopy at Ned's home is the largest wisteria in OB.

From the OB Historical Society's invitation: "We look forward to another year of Wisteria in full bloom at our tea party where we will have lovely music by John Taffolla and delectables. Please come join us for a beautiful afternoon of OB culture and fun."
