The Keymaster - a feature length documentary about wooden flute maker Patrick Olwell. To order HD Download, DVD or Blu-ray, go to thekeymastermovie.com
From a Liberal Arts college in Massachusetts to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, Patrick Olwell's journey has led him to become one of the great wooden flute makers of all time. His flutes are played by some of the top Irish musicians in the world, including Matt Molloy of The Chieftains and Seamus Egan of Solas. With a quirky sense of humour and the voice of a storyteller, Patrick recounts his humble beginnings as an instrument maker, living in a cabin in rural Virginia with no electricity or running water, and his slow climb to prominence as his flutes become some of the most sought after instruments in Celtic music. In a voyage of discovery, the film weaves together not just Patrick's story, but also the many steps in making a flute, some rare wood trivia, Irish sessions, archery, swimming, laughter, tears, and interviews with some of the most dynamic Irish musicians out there today.
A genuinely human portrait of an intelligent, passionate craftsman, 'The Keymaster' is a film for everyone, and shows what can happen when you never give up on your dreams.

This is a video made from ten days of travel and filming in Ireland the last week in October 2012. We were interviewing flute players all over Ireland, 10 in all, including Matt Molloy of the Chieftans and Tom Doorley from Danu. The interviews and associated footage will be used in the upcoming feature documentary; "The Keymaster - Patrick Olwell's story" premiering in Boulder, CO, February 28th, 2013. A big "thank you!" to my DP, Blayne Chastain, as most of the 'beauty' shots are his. He also kept me grounded and stable during our 10-day trek. Watch out for downtown Dublin!

Part of the documentary I'm doing on Patrick Olwell is exploring the unbreakable connection between traditional music and dance. All of our tunes were meant to be danced to, and the best players have spent a lot of time playing for dancers. Another part of the documentary is about the passing on of traditions, and Matthew and Aaron Olwell have been soaking up tradition their whole lives. Although both can play Irish traditional tunes on flute, they have each expanded their mastery of tradition; Matthew as a professional dancer, and Aaron as an old-time fiddle player. I wanted to capture that amazing connection, so we went to Rapunzel's Coffeehouse in Lovingston, VA, and let it rip. Matthew and Aaron are joined by Amy Hunsicker on claw-hammer banjo performing an old time tune called "Possum up a 'Simmon tree".
This is a video blog of our visit to Patrick Olwell's shop in Massie's Mill, VA, where we did filming for the upcoming feature documentary on Patrick and his sons. There was music all day, every day, great stories, a trip to the swimming hole, delicious dinners and a mighty session at the end. Hopefully this short film captures the feel of what it was like to be there working on the film, and some of what the final film will look like. Enjoy!
