Notes on Liszt: Prelude on Weinen Klagen Sorgen Sagen
Liszt uses the repeated descending bass-line to create a breathtaking passacaglia on a theme from Bach’s cantata of the same title. This is not the work of Liszt the demonstrative composer and performing virtuoso. He also possessed an intensely searching musical mind. The pleading melodic lines and enchanting harmonies heard in this work are the essence of the composer better known for pyrotechnics and bravura. Liszt was eventually inspired to compose a monumental set of variations for organ on the same theme. At that time he used a much more dramatic and virtuosic style for the extended work. The organist Alexander Winterberger (who premiered the great Ad Nos fantasy) was fond enough of the piano prelude to make his own arrangement for the organ. The transcription heard on this record is taken partly from Winterberger’s transcription and combined with additional material from the original piano score.
